Those who know me know that I have been skateboarding for many years. And for the past three years I have served on the board of a nonprofit organization called the Downingtown Skatepark Organization. Our goal has been to advocate for the local action sports community and to fundraise for an open-access concrete skatepark to be built in our area. As most projects go, it has been a slow process, but we’re getting close to breaking ground soon. We had nothing like this growing up, so bringing this park to our town is going to be big! I know my sons, the neighborhood kids, and many others in the community can’t wait.
In addition to working to get a skatepark, we have been able to do a lot of things, including sponsoring a local skateboarder, holding fun events like Go Skateboarding Day, and talking to members of the community about the project. We have been lucky to have the support of members of the Downingtown Borough Council, the Mayor Josh Maxwell, local business owners, and more.
With my background in psychology and skateboarding I know just how important it is for kids to have a safe, legal place to meet and hang out. And I also know how great of an activity action sports can be- for physical exercise, socialization, self-esteem, and more. I’m proud that I have been able to be a part of it, and I hope to be able to celebrate soon. If you’re interested, check out our website to see what we’ve been doing.
